TruOFFICE enables simple and cost-effective remote access
With the rising cost of gas prices, the transportation challenges caused by transit strikes and snow storms, and the importance of balancing work-life priorities, there are times when employees would prefer to work from home. Direction First – a high tech company located in a major city’s downtown – understands that teleworking is a growing business trend and that studies are showing that teleworkers can in fact be more productive than when they operate within the office. Direction First currently does not own any technology that would enable employees to effectively perform their jobs from outside the office, but the company’s management team have communicated their openness to proposals that would cost-effectively provide their employees with this opportunity.
The Challenge: Simple, Secure and Cost-Effective Remote Access
Chris – the marketing promotions manager at Direction First – is wholly dedicated to his job; he is also dedicated to his daughter. Chris just signed his daughter up for piano lessons, which will take place at 6:00pm, two nights a week. The issue is that Chris typically takes public transit into the office and does not return home until 6:15pm each night. If Chris could obtain access to his office computer from his home, he would be able to perform his job from home during the day and still be able to take his daughter to her lessons on time.
After receiving approval from his boss, Chris approached the IT department to determine if there was a way to access his office desktop from home. The IT manager informed Chris that Direction First currently had no technology that would accommodate this request and that recent budget cuts would impede the company from purchasing a laptop and a traditional VPN account as a potential solution.
The IT department was also concerned with the idea of employees removing private and confidential files from the protection of the organization’s firewall, risking data leakages by attacks against files moving across internet and data leakages from lost or stolen mobile devices.
Implementing the Route1 Solution
The IT manager and Chris began researching simple, secure and cost-effective solutions to solve this remote access challenge. Chris discovered Route1’s TruOFFICE™ service with the Route1 MobiKEY® and requested a trial for IT to test its security and interoperability with the company’s existing IT infrastructure.
Once IT received the trial MobiKEY and subscription, they were able to – to their surprise – set up a remote connection to Chris’ office computer within minutes. Zero firewall reconfigurations were necessary and no additional hardware was required for the service to work.
After validating that TruOFFICE does not physically transfer files between the remote and office computer, for himself, the IT manager felt comfortable letting Chris connect to his office computer by using his personal computer at home. Since files are unable to transfer from one computer to another, the organization felt confident that:
- Malicious software on Chris’ computer could not infect their network, and
- Chris’ home computer would contain zero company data that could be exploited in the event of the computer’s theft
A Successful Implementation
Chris now regularly uses his TruOFFICE service to telework from his home twice a week. With his 24x7 access to his office computer and network resources, Chris feels better about his work-life balance and is finding that he is enjoying his job a lot more than he used to.
The IT department was so impressed by the simple and cost-effective implementation of TruOFFICE’s remote access service that the organization is now considering making TruOFFICE and the Route1 MobiKEY available to workers across the organization.
